ISO 29001:2020 Oil & Gas Industry Quality Management Certification in Dubai & UAE

Oil and gas buyers do not accept variable quality. A failed valve, weld or inspection can mean a shutdown, a safety event or a multi-million dirham loss. ISO 29001:2020 is the sector-specific quality management standard for the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries, built on ISO 9001 with additional requirements for the supply chain. BRSM Global helps manufacturers, service companies and contractors in Dubai and the UAE implement and certify a quality system that meets the demands of the energy sector.

What is ISO 29001 Oil & Gas Quality Management Certification?

ISO 29001:2020, Petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries - Sector-specific quality management systems - Requirements for product and service supply organizations, incorporates ISO 9001:2015 and adds sector-specific requirements. It was developed to harmonise quality requirements across the industry so that suppliers do not need to meet different quality demands from every operator, and it replaced the earlier ISO/TS 29001 technical specification as a full international standard.

In addition to the ISO 9001 clauses, ISO 29001 adds sector requirements such as product and service quality plans, design and development controls, management of safety and environment-related requirements, control of externally provided processes and products, traceability and identification, special processes, inspection and testing, handling of non-conforming product, and control of calibration. Organisations that hold ISO 9001 can build on it, but ISO 29001 certification is a separate audit. See our Oil & Gas sector page for the wider services.

ISO 29001 Oil & Gas Quality Management Certification Process: How BRSM Global Gets You Certified

Our approach follows the four-stage process that BRSM Global applies to every management system project: guidance, implementation, auditing and post-certification. For ISO 29001 Oil & Gas Quality Management Certification, that translates into the following eight practical steps.

Step 1: Free consultation and scope definition

We start with a conversation about your business, sites, activities and customers. We confirm whether ISO 29001 fits your goals, define the scope of certification and agree a realistic timeline.

Step 2: Gap analysis

Our consultants compare your current practices, documents and records with the requirements of ISO 29001:2020. You receive a clear gap report with priorities, so effort goes where it matters.

Step 3: Planning and fixed quote

Based on the gap analysis we prepare a project plan with responsibilities and milestones and a fixed written quote, so you know the investment before work begins.

Step 4: Documentation and implementation

We help you develop the policies, procedures, registers and records the standard requires, in plain language and sized to your organisation, and we help your team put them into daily practice. This is the 'Guidance' and 'Implementation' stage of our process.

Step 5: Training and awareness

Management and staff are trained on their responsibilities under ISO 29001. Where relevant we also train internal auditors, who will later audit your system.

Step 6: Internal audit and management review

Once the system has been operating, we help you run an internal audit and a management review. These are mandatory and give you the chance to fix issues before the external audit.

Step 7: Independent certification audit (Stage 1 and Stage 2)

The certification audit is carried out by an independent certification body, never by your consultant. Stage 1 reviews documentation and readiness. Stage 2 verifies implementation on site through interviews, observation and records. We prepare your team and support you during the audit; this is the 'Auditing' stage of our process.

Step 8: Certificate issue and post-certification support

After any nonconformities are closed, the certificate is issued, normally for three years with annual surveillance audits. We stay with you after certification, advising on changes, standard updates and surveillance audit preparation, which is our 'Post-certification' stage. Our article on leading ISO transitions with people at the centre explains why this support matters.

Documents Required for ISO 29001

Typical documented information includes:

  • Quality manual or system overview, policy and objectives
  • Product and service quality plans
  • Design and development records where applicable
  • Approved supplier list, supplier evaluation and purchasing records
  • Inspection and test plans and records
  • Special process procedures and personnel qualification records
  • Traceability and identification records
  • Calibration records for measuring equipment
  • Nonconformity and corrective action records
  • Internal audit and management review records

How Long Does ISO 29001 Certification Take?

Because most suppliers already operate a quality system, ISO 29001 implementation typically takes 3 to 6 months. Organisations starting from scratch need 6 to 9 months. Time depends on design responsibility, special processes in scope and the number of sites. Certification uses a two-stage audit, with a three-year certificate and annual surveillance audits.

Who Needs ISO 29001 Certification?

This certification is relevant to a wide range of organisations, including:

  • Manufacturers and fabricators of equipment for oil and gas
  • Engineering, inspection and maintenance service providers
  • Distributors and stockists of valves, pipe and fittings
  • EPC subcontractors and packagers
  • Suppliers pursuing registration with national and international operators
